Luke
21:29-33
This is the last week of our liturgical year
and the biblical readings these days are about the end of time. The Gospel
today presents the final recommendations of the Apocalyptic Discourse. Jesus
insists on two points: He insists first, on the attention which should be given
to the signs of the times and second, on hope founded on the firmness of the
word of God which drives away fear to despair.
Jesus asks to contemplate the phenomena of
nature to learn how to read and interpret the things which are happening in the
world. This recommendation is not
easy. I think this attention to nature, this attention to things around us that
Jesus is talking about is living our daily life in the light of the gospel.
Today, many people live worried concerning
the end of the world. Some, basing themselves on a mistaken reading of the
Apocalypse of John, even arrive at calculating the exact date of the end of the
world. But Jesus is saying, look around you and live your life in the
light of my word. Hold on to my word, because heaven and earth will pass away,
but my word will not pass away.
If we hold on his word, than his return will
be a reason for joy and peace; his coming will be a Good News!
